John Garbutt Lodge (1922 - 2008) was many things in his lifetime: pilot, artist, actor, Rolfer®, Rolfing®Structural Integration Instructor, the illustrator of Dr. Rolf's book...
He was born and raised in Northern California. During World War II, he was a B-17 pilot based in England. He flew thirty-five missions over Nazi Germany and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in flight and two Purple Hearts.
While stationed in England, John studied watercolor (which later became his favorite medium) under famed British painter and architect Paul Earee.
After World War II, John earned a Master of Arts from the University of California at Berkeley. In the 1950s, he was a professor of art at the University of Michigan. His own artwork, signed with his family name, Garbutt, was exhibited at art galleries across the nation.
In the 1960’s John went to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting and adopted the name John Lodge by which he was to be known for the rest of his life. The role many of you may have seen him in was the sheriff in the cult TV series Bonanza.

John Lodge was also a teacher at the Rolf Institute for basic trainings, as well as a member of the board of directors. He also taught advanced trainings through the Guild for Structural Integration. He was one of the first generation of Rolfers® Ida Rolf chose. These were very special people. Anyone who studied with Peter Melchior, Emmett Hutchins or John Lodge can attest to this.

The Artist
John looked at life from a metaphysical perspective and loved deep conversation. His art often explores metaphysical themes. This is what Ida Rolf probably saw this when she met him a a dinner party in Florida in the late 60's and then decided that he would be the artist for her book. John's art reflects his understanding of layers. There is much to look at in them.
